Easter Wreath Topiary

I love finding ways to save money, and that usually involves using my creativity and crafty talents. This is exactly what happened when I found an Easter Wreath Topiary at Pier 1 Imports a few years ago, but realized I could make a cheaper and (in my opinion) better looking version myself.

This topiary would be perfect on a table or on a shelf. You can easily make one for other holidays or to even use in your everyday decor. Just use regular bird's eggs in the nest and use more flowers on the wreath instead of the Easter eggs. For more fun, add a small bird or butterfly! There are many ways you can change this general tutorial to make it work in your own home.

You'll need:

-A clay pot (Mine is 6 or 6 1/2 inches)
-Spackle
-clear glitter (I used glass glitter)
-A small grapevine wreath (Mine has a 8 1/2 to 9 inch center, measured from side to side)
-1 bird nest
-White spray paint
-mini plastic eggs (I used 9 eggs that were about 2 inches long)
-white craft glue
-small craft brush
-glitter in colors of the eggs you are using
-1 hydrangea or other large flower
-1 small bunch small tulips or other small flowers
-1 or 2 stems of tiny flowers or berries for wreath
-filler flowers for pot
-small amount of ribbon for bow.
-hot glue gun and glue sticks
-4 to 6 craft sticks, Popsicle sticks, dowels, or even sticks from the yard (these are for support and will not be seen)

I did the first three steps the night before assembling my project. Plan to wait a few hours for drying time if making this project in a day.

1. Using your hands or a putty knife, spread Spackle over entire outside of the pot, creating a lot of texture for interest. While the Spackle is still wet, sprinkle glitter all over it. Set pot aside to dry.

The glitter is hard to see in this picture, but in person the pot has a clear shimmery look.

2. Brush white craft glue on eggs, then sprinkle with glitter. For this project, you only need to glitter one side of the egg since the back side will not be seen. Set aside until dry.

3. Paint wreath and nest white with spray paint. This may take several light coats Allow to dry.

4. Add a piece of Styrofoam in the pot. Then dig out a trench towards the back of the pot. This will leave plenty of room to hold flowers in front. The pot should look similar to this now:

5. Place wreath on pot and fit it into the trench. Glue in place. Then using the craft sticks, dowels, etc., press the sticks into the Styrofoam as close to the wreath as possible and glue to the wreath. Do this on the front and the back side. This just gives the wreath extra support so it won't fall over.

Close Up of the sticks used to anchor the wreath.

6. Glue two glittered eggs in the bird's nest, then glue bird nest on the wreath. It should be on the lower right hand side of the wreath as shown.

7. Cut the hydrangea or large flower and stick it into the Styrofoam base. This will cover the majority of the pot opening. Also, take the smallest flowers or berries and arrange them around the wreath. Put a few flowers near the bird's nest. Follow the shape of the left side of the wreath, adding the flowers in a pleasing manner.

8. Glue remaining eggs in a random pattern on the left side of the wreath in spaces between the small flowers.

Cut tulips to size and tuck randomly into wreath in the empty spots between the eggs and other flowers. Remember to add a few to the right side near the nest to balance it out. Also, tuck in any filler flowers into the base of the pot.

9. Tie a simple bow like you are tying a shoelace. Glue it to the front center of the pot.

Now you have a very pretty decoration for your home!

So crafty, creative and clever. It would be a pretty addtion to any Easter vignette.
I would love to make it nearly monochromatic, choosing just 1 (or 2 closely related) pastel shades. You are so inspiring.
